Well , I guess it was always going to happen ! Went to the local park last night with my grandson to have a swing and we had a good night [see photo - notice the 1951 sixpence]. The downside was a visit, firstly by the local copper, who strolled over from the shop across the road, and then a council worker, sympathetic to the cause [he swings too]who dropped in to see how we were going. The local copper conveyed the law, blah, blah, blah, and then proceeded to tell me that if I didn't dig then it might be ok. The council worker told me of about 10 people who were doing similarly around the area, but leaving huge messes and much more.
Why would it be, that someone [and you know who you are] would think that to dig holes in someone's DRIVEWAY was ok, but then didn't have the common decency to fill the BL***y holes in. And those who dig on the long white beach at Wallaroo, think that its not necessary to fill in the holes. I get the tide will do that, but those in high places are only thinking of law suits and injury, and surely it doesn't take long to do.
And then there's the guy who decided to tell the council worker that "I do this professionally". [From my point of view, he must be able to exist on next to nothing, cause we don't find 1930 pennies and the like very often]
Fairdinkum, I thought we did this stuff with a little concealment so that it was kept as quiet as possible.
So my next step, locally, might not be palatable, and not for this forum, as clearly some of the people of the South Australian detecting scene are real "cowboys". [I want to try to protect the pastime I love.] And you might say that its only individuals but if only one of the ten around this area doing really STUPID stuff, then that's 10% of our population and over Australia, that's a huge number. I could say "clean your act up" but it wouldn't make a scrap of difference, I'm surecause I've been to the Vict Godfields and there are holes left everywhere.
Had my rant. Now to the council. [Cant load the photo]

Mate I am hearing you on this one.

Its the 10% rule. 10% of people think that the rules are for the other 90%.

10% of people doing the wrong thing are why fireworks were banned in NSW years ago.

10% of people think that blinkers on are a car are there for show and not to indicate.

10% of people do not and never will backfill their holes.

10% of people trespass on private property to detect.

10% of people are responsible for most of our laws that stop fun, e.g. guns, pub curfews etc

10% of people are why I like going prospecting all by myself. If I don't run into a 10%er I ve had a great day!

90% of people suffer from 10% of other peoples selfish actions.

We cant change others behaviour, only they can do that. We can challenge their way of thinking though.

Regards

RS

That's a pretty frustrating position to be in Tassie, I am always mindful of being blamed for others incompetance, but am happy to say that I haven't encountered such damage in the areas I detect so far.

With regards to the council, it may be "game over" looking for deeper coins in some local parks, unless you are personally known to them, otherwise it may result in an outright ban on detecting full stop. I have had plenty of police visits in the past whilst out detecting with no issues, and always do my best to leave things as I find them, and hopefully others will do the same.

Then there are those that have no conscience, and do as they please.

No doubt sooner or later councils will be forced to introduce regulations to deal with the matter, as they have done in some parts of the US, and unfortunately they won't disciminate between those who are doing right, and those doing wrong. :|

I am seeing more and more of the actions by some; that show a total disregard to good manners and doing the right thing...

I am sure that if you or I jumped their fence for some nighthawk work, and then left a pile of mullock heaps and the scrap still on the ground; they would not be happy..

But the shame is that they do not see it OR want to understand it.

I posted yesterday about some fool in a kids pay area with a Mattock and digging to china... All for what a 5c or 20c piece... Maybe even a $2 ?

NOT worth it...

And he got a crushed can, and left it there and then had a run in with some locals.

That 10% are hard core and to me are committing Eco-terrorism every time they head out... That is they have no respect for shared or private property and the outcome of their actions impact on the whole community and not just those involved in MD.

Just my 1967 2 cents worth.

After the Security Guard and police taking my time up the other day and being accused of damaging property and also questioned as to multiple break and enters; I am more than a little pissed at the behaviour of some...

I think I might make one of those huge PVC pipe containers so I can bury my detector safely away(upright and deep),.. just incase the Gov't ends up making them illegal because of all the yoboes out there,... almost sounds like some of them thought the money was to be found in a bank or something(I feel the pain).

Had a home visit from a pair of detectives asking if I was in a local park at 9.00pm on a particular date. I said probably yes as I have been going out regularly evenings and nights to various places. They said someone had seen me hanging around some trees and reported my rego as they thought I was stalking them!

I told them I was detecting and showed them a handfull of pre-dec and $1 & $2 coins I had sitting in the loungeroom. I also told them I go detecting at those times in an attempt to minimise human interaction and try to be discreet instead of sticking out like dogs balls to all and sundry in daylight hours.

The cops backed straight off and apologised but pointed out that my activities may be construed as suspicious by some people. I asked if what I was doing or the times I did it were illegal and offered to stop if that was the case. They assured me I was doing nothing wrong and to by all means continue what I have been doing up till now. Went to the same spot that evening and got 10 more coins.

I have yet to encounter a by-laws officer to discuss the definition and perceived causation of damage which is the only thing prohibited by the local Council.

Some total morons out there, thought you were stalking them, now I've heard it all.............. Lucky you found some coins to prove what you were doing or you may have been in for a cavity search.

I can understand how some might think it suspicious.

For some years after being broken into, if a strange cark parked out front. And no one got out, my wife would get a bit stresed.

Another lady i know is always on edge, as her x is a nutter andd always breaches the restraining orders, and tracks her down when she moves...

So, Yes I can understand why some would call the police....

One good thing to see out of it was that at least there was a response to someone's claims from the higher branch of the constabulary, showing a fairly good degree of response and an instant understanding of the circumstances with good input for you on the lawfulness of your non-nefarious activities.(IE- They didn't bust in and throw you down while thrusting handcuffs on you, before asking questions), You have to admit, we are soo lucky to be living where we are.

Might finally have posted this photo!......................finally [an extension problem I think]
Hey GN, good to hear you got a couple of blokes who were reasonable. My copper wanted to trot out "Theft by finding" and then proceeded to tell me what I needed to do to lodge them at the station. So I told her that they wouldn't be found in all the same place so a form would have to be filled in for every coin ["and I got a heap of them home from other places too"] and wouldn't that make a lot of work? She agreed!
