Had the urge to get more out of the weekend and try my first night hunt.

It was a most enjoyable, even had a few bunnies keep me company.

Fun isn't it! Looks like the goldies were flowing for you over the weekend. Don't you just love those Calipo foil lids - not!

More fun than I thought Goldpick, got to say you were the inspiration for giving it a go. Thanks.

I think there is a lot more gold to come from this spot, I covered about 5% of the area and most of the goldie's were quite deep, so I think I am on a winner. Minimal trash as well. :D

Had to go out again and have another try of this new sport of night detecting.

I have been eyeing off a park that is in an odd spot for some time and checked out the 1942 aerial photos of the site today to plan my attack.

The ground was very noisy and I focused on digging clearly recognisable targets on the 705. Not many of those I must say so after a good hour I had 3 bucks 20 and the discarded proceeds of crime and am thinking someone had beaten me to it or the old coins had sunk beyond range of the minelab.

As is customary, I decided to do one more circular sweep across an area before I left. I knew there was a long gone pre40s path in the vicinity so was going a bit slower and I got a deep mixed signal that bounced between a $2 and 10c on the target range. I have been noticing that deeper $2 give me bouncing signal reading and these bouncing readings give me a 50/50 chance of $2 or a screw cap.

After struggling to locate the target for what seemed like an eternity it popped out at about 6" deep.
A thin coin between the fingers had me thinking silver sixpence but being a bit bigger and dark I then thought 10c. And that is when the dirt fell through the hole. Yep.... then though holey-ship, a Chinese coin.

After a quick finger rub it looks like the real deal and very old. I have it soaking in olive oil, hope it is one of those family hoard coins sent out with the gold rush Chinese that date well back into history.

Still thinking there is a handful of pre decimals there somewhere , and where there were Chinese, there sometimes is gold, am thinking sovereigns :p  :p

Nice work, good little pick up, and a handy hint, Aeriel photography from the past, very nice. Look forward to seeing more great finds.

Nice find Wally, hope it's an old one. Hard to tell sometimes if places have already been detected or are just barren of good targets. I use the google earth historical imagery regularly to see where people congregate in parks and sportsfields.

My mate and I have found a bunch of Pennies this week, 3 each in old coin spills. So they are still out there. The ones I found were only about 10cm down all on top of each other, ones my mate found were a little deeper and about a foot apart. All were in poor condition. Really wanting to find some more Florins and Shillings, mmmm and a Gold Sov would awesome.

A lot of the parks/sportsfields around here are former landfill sites, most seem to be actually, can make detecting anything good very difficult.

Now that I am a Chinese coin identification expert.....here goes:

It is a coin minted during the Ch'ien Lung dynasty, minted in Manchu Yuwan Provence by the Board of Public Works between 1736 and 1795 = my oldest coin to date :D

Below is what it should look like, I'll post some 'what it looks like' photos once I have cleaned it up.

Great find Wally, very unexpected find I guess, considering there was not much older stuff around on that hunt. :)

Sweet find - do you have any idea what the values are of these types of coins?

Some of these era coins are rare and can be worth big bucks but this one in particular, despite its age, is probably worth less than the olive oil it is soaking in.

Look on your face when you do all the research and realise this is so.......priceless :8

i have this same coin date & looked for it on ebay, It seems because this emperor reigned for so long there were lots of them produced, sorry to say but value seems to be only a few dollars. but well done I will not get rid of mine & now have 3 of them.

Nice work Wally. After reading topics of members night hunts I have started doing a few myself. On arvo I finish at midnight and have started doing a park hunt for an hour or so on my way home. Great fun :)

How is the night hunting going Ramjet, Maitland has some great history.

Went back to see if the Chinese coin had a sister, no luck, but may have solved the riddle of how it got there instead. Poor chinaman lost his daks, I still can't believe how many belt buckles there are out there.
