G'day there everyone,

am totally new to this hobby. Trying to learn fast.

This morning I picked up from the post office my new pride and joy - my first ever metal detector - a Minelab X-Terra 705 (Dual Pack).

Had other stuff to do so wasn't till this arvo that I got a chance to put it together. I did it the quick way - just watched a youtube video on assembly and gave it a go.

Now, I have used a metal detector before, but that was in the army almost thirty years ago - can't remember much of that. But the thing that struck me was how light the thing is - it is awesome.

Just had to give it a go, so I switched it on and played in the tiny patch of lawn in my back yard. Still don't understand all that "ground balancing" stuff etc, but justed turned it on, set it to "treasure" and went....

My first find was a small sliver of metal:

Then within a couple of minutes I found my first coin!!

Unbeleivable, but when I cleaned it a bit I saw the word "Afrika" More cleaning and made out the year 2008, "Afrika", and "uMzantsi" - the reverse side is far more deteriorated but could sort of make out a large number 5 - a google search reveals it as a 5c South African coin :)

So my first find in my own backyard is a foreign coin!! Even if it is newish and worthless - I am stoked :)

Here is my treasure:

I stopped there as it is only a tiny backyard and my better half was concerned with me digging the only piece of lawn :)

By the way, the metal sliver was about 4 inches down, the coin about 3 inches. I know that a few years back this yard was renovated by the owners (we rent) so that could explain a reasonably fresh coin being so far down?
