Looking on here and having the Uncles detectors sitting in the house got the better of me today so I took the kids and dogs for a trip out the road to Mt McDonald (apparently used to be a few gold mines out that way) I chucked in 2 of the detectors (XT 17000 & the Groundhog) to have a play about with.

in the end there wasn't much to report only found about 15 nails, a horse shoe, old chain, 2 bullets and some tin lol, still learning how to set up each of the detectors as there seemed to be a fair bit of ground interference in places, the groundhog seemed to be more affected than the 1700

Still,... they are working if you are finding stuff like that, ... just down load the original opperating manuals to know them inside out and hit the same area again with new found info , skill level, and vigor. ;) :D

good to see it got the better of you and you took them out for a test drive, even found a few things which is a bonus, sounding like the bug is biting ;)

The beast you have on ebay-correct me if I'm wrong- is a Deepseeker. The Groundhogs are the smaller box with rounded corners, to my knowledge, but later Deepseekers also came in the smaller, rounded box. Deepseekers are 5.5 khz and Groundhogs 15 khz. It took me ages of fiddling and re-reading the manual to set my Deepseeker up right, but in the end I was impressed with its' performance considering its' antiquity. Ground balance is set by lifting the coil up and down and adjusting until there is no response going either way, but I read somewhere it is better for sensitivity to have slightly positive ground response. Once set you retune by holding the switch to the left for 1 second. Although a bit weighty, especially with the larger coils, they are still more sensitive than anything up to about a $600-$800 modern detector. I'm in the process of making a hipstick for mine.
The groundhog, I found, was slightly better again, especially on gold. Mine has 2 extra pots up the front-one for sound frequency and one for headphone volume.
At the moment I am looking for my first ever Minelab. That won't be a PI or modern one on a carers pension, so an 18, 17,16, musketeer or eldorado will have to suffice for now.
Southy the manuals are free downloads from Garretts site, but you will have to trawl through them as there are many, many, variances.
