Thinking of checking out a friends Z19 coil compared to my Z14 coil in the next couple of weeks. However have heard that the mossie's are very bad over there. 2 weeks ago friend tried 3 places out from Maryborough and was bitten thru his jeans and this was B4 2pm and gave up detecting.

Any ideas about areas that are not so mossie friendly.

Came across this Mossie Repellent that am told it works:

Combine in a 16 oz bottle:
15 drops lavender oil
3-4 Tbsp of vanilla extract
1/4 Cup lemon juice.

From memory the Tbsp is Table spoon, but not sure.

Peter

Haha,
yeah pete they are out in force at the moment!!
Just be sure to take plenty of bushmans insect repellant and apply every 2hrs.
You should be fine but....
apply it everywhere!!
I somehow got bitten on my head even with a hat on!!!
Sneaky buggers!!!

This is what i had to do to overcome the mozzies. Wore thick jeans, long socks, light weight coat, leather gloves, hat, mosquito net. Then sprayed bushman's over everything every couple of hours. It was a tad uncomfortable but no mossie bites. Although i had to adjust the mosquito net so that it didn't touch my face otherwise they would get me through it there. I also had to change my cloth gloves over to leather as they bite through the cloth. Make sure your pants don't fall down when digging a target otherwise they will bite the exposed bit (crack... sorry didn't know how to explain it any other way.) I usually tuck my jeans into my socks to avoid ants crawling up my leg but felt stinging and looked down to see 5 or more mossies lined up on each sock just above the shoe biting through the sock. Just pushed the jeans down to cover that spot and all was good.

I was a wederburn 2 wks ago. 13 confirmed cases of ross river virus. Mozzies by millions they eat bushmans for breakfast and Off is desert..we used some rosemary and cederwood oil in a creme. Plus lavender oil and all the protective clothing. I was detecting in some gullies would have a couple of hundred down front of clothes. Not good if you wanted a pee. Wore leather gloves they even went through them. My mate was only wearing a thin long sleeved shirt. He looked like he had been shot by submachine gun blood spots all over him. It wasn't fun having to wear so much clothing especially when the weather warmed up.

Hi Peter, I'm from SA also, I went over to Dunolly area for the GT get together and the mozzies were bad, but I didn't get bitten through the mozzie proof shirt and pants I was wearing. They are called Craghoppers, made in England for the poms when they travel abroad I guess, but they seem to do the job. The shirt has a double fold collar so you can protect your neck and ears when you turn it up. Nice and lightweight too and comfortable. They impregnate the material with some sort of repellant and its supposed to be guaranteed for the life of the garment. Not cheap, but hey, they work. Got mine from Anaconda.

Regards Adrian.

Do those electronic Repellers work keeping mozzies out of the Caravan/motorhome eg when U open the door. Cannot see them being used while detecting as most likely will cause problems with the detector.

Thanks for the update dam it and Redfin. Now get ready for the fly season
The Rosemary & Cedar oils are the ingredients of Natures Botanical which those in WA swear by (expensive though).
At the recent VIC GT Camp, I used this on exposed skin (face, neck, arms & legs - no gloves, or head net and wearing short sleeves & shorts) but also coated my clothing heavily with 50/50 Bushmans and Aeroguard. I could see the mozzies hovering around me as a CO2 and heat source, but they didn't get closer than a half meter. I ended up with only a few itchy bites - places I'd probably missed. Mardymoose and Dig'n-it would say it's probably the excess Bundy though ;)
Will be interesting to see how that combo goes in fly season.

Just got back from Rheola today and not a mozzie in sight. Things are starting to dry up well. Two weeks ago the mozzies would carry you away. We had other prospectors in Bee keeper suits and they were not having any issues :)

I was up around Graytown and Whroo about 10 days ago and was surprised to see only about a half dozen mossies given I was eaten alive in the GT about 4 weeks ago. I thought that things might have been on the improve, but maybe it just depends where you go.

Gotta watch out for the snakes too.

Whipstick north of Bendigo today. No mozzies. A few flies. My cousin out at Raywood tells me the hot weather last week kicked in the a$$.

BTW, 2 small pieces of yellow - so small they could be golden fly ****

Thanks for the updates guys, I was out last Saturday near Talbot with a few mozzies still trying their luck and the flies were a real pain getting under my sun glass lenses, not fun when swinging with headphones over a hat and 2 flies fighting between your eyes and the lens.
Heading out next weekend so fingers crossed the mozzies stay away.
