I have read and heard the recommended setting (not by the manufacturer) of mono coils being primarily run in the DD setting (including on commercially available DVDs). Has anyone seen a definitive test on this issue/matter? Some recommendations are to run the monos in mono if there is high EMI. These primarily relate to the 4500/5000 and these machines are now several years old so I would have thought the issue would have been resolved one way or the other. Probably relates to personal preferences I guess and my testing is inconclusive but a snap poll of some seasoned old diggers was mono in mono - DD in DD. (users of both 4500/5000)

Comments?

Mono in Mono and DD in DD mate. Wouldn't run any other way, have tried the cross overs and found them inferior in sensitivity. That's with the 5000's.

Wal - your advice is what I am hearing as well from the old crew. Cheers mate.

Have heard of using a DD in mono in certain situations? This write up might be of interest Loamer.

I've used the supplied 11" DD coil very successfully with the GPX 5000. You can either use Cancel mode for high interference areas or Mono mode for other mineralised places. Mono mode and Cancel mode on the Coil/Rx switch in conjunction with a DD coil and the Fine Gold timings have been very useful for me in certain areas, especially where the ground is shallow (down to 10" or so) and the gold small. Because the 11" coil has much smaller receive windings over a mono coil of the same size it is actually more sensitive on targets close to the coil (generates a brighter response) but you need to be mindful there is a pretty big trade off on outright depth (Cancel mode and Mono mode will not punch as deep as DD mode with a DD coil, and a DD coil in DD mode will not punch as deep as a Mono coil in Mono or DD mode even using Enhance or Fine Gold). The other thing I should point out, it is not recommended to use a DD coil in DD mode using any of the "Smooth" type timings especially Fine Gold, however a DD coil in a pseudo mono type Rx mode like Cancel or Mono mode is OK. Another thing of note is a DD coil in either Mono mode or Cancel mode generates their response on the left side and middle of the coil, generally if the target is deep is sounds like the response is coming from the centre of the coil, if shallow more so from the left (helps with pinpointing a target) Hope this helps,JP
PS Typical settings I use for a DD coil in Mono mode using a Smooth type timing.
Gain 13
Motion Slow
Audio Deep
Tracking Fixed (Medium speed)
Soil Timings Fine Gold or Enhance
Tone 63
Stabilizer 8
Signal 19
General Search mode
If you go into the Cancel Rx then you can easily crank the Gain to the moon because EMI is virtually non existent, watch out for a bit of coil touch sensitivity though.

Thanks Mbasko - I am aware of JPs philosophy on the mono/DD. In cancel, I can't even find my pick!

In cancel with a mono you won't hear any signal as it will be phase cancelled out. Cancel with a DD is still extremely sensitive, just with reduced depth.

I like mono in mono and DD in DD or cancel when EMI is severe in suburbia.

 yeah have read that before too. The more I read up on the GPX5000 the more mind boggling it gets. Settings for this settings for that. Opinions on this opinions on that. Might have to keep plugging away with the SD2200D as I pretty much just turn it on, tune, ground balance & go. Looks to be some more learning to do before I step up again hopefully early next year but I think I'll enjoy it. Hopefully things will start to make more sense with one in my hands.

a decent size dd in mono running in normal is good for finishing up a patch, it seems to pick up some little ones that don't come through with mono's. not sure why.
mono in dd, I don't bother with.
just my opinion.

Not quite correct, a mono will still work in cancel. I use it often when you have a large piece of rubbish and your detector is screaming over a large area, flick it to cancel and it dulls the signal right down and allows you to pin point it.
