A mate of mine flies in a jet, doing this AMSA/customs stuff..
They will fly over Asia just as an exercise...
Very little that they or sats can't see nowadays...

Do the coppers not have a helicopter to fly over the road he would have been travelling on?

They do sometimes send fixed wing aircraft up for initial search and rescue operations. Sometimes they air drop essentials and communications. Rescue choppers are used in some cases. It all depends.
