If you spend enough time beachcombing with or without a metal detector, there's a chance you'll sooner or later come across a message in a bottle. Unfortunately, both those that I've found appeared to have been launched from beaches where tide and wave action promptly returned them to the shore, kinda defeating their purpose.
This one looked intriguing, as there were numerous messages tightly stuffed inside a 700ml wine bottle:
Sadly, the message that I carefully extracted revealed that the bottle was launched in memoriam for a recently lost young woman, mourned by her many friends:
Found separately, the other much smaller bottle contained a single, poignant message to a recently deceased grandparent:
Each of the bottles was carefully resealed and later returned to the Indian Ocean, in deeper water from the end of a groyne.
