Hi guys, new to the forum here. Just got a general(ish) question about legal areas to pan in central Victoria. Long story short, I used to go panning in the Bendigo creek with my dad as a kid (40 odd years ago - very fond memories) and would like to do some panning again. Been searching the forum and researching the exemption no-no list and it seems a lot of creeks and rivers etc. are off limits?? Just wondering if its actually worth forking out money for new pans/equipment for a hobby when theres no areas left to legally pan? Any advice?

Cheers, Simone :)

Where are you based?
Yes the banned list is pretty big, but there are plenty of spots to go.
Have a look at the parks Vic website http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/visit/popular-activities/fossicking
The allowed areas in the parks list override the exempt rivers list.
IE if a creek is on the banned list BUT if it is in the parks allowed list you can prospect in the creek, but only in the parks allowed boundary area on the maps.

So for example Reedy creek is on the no go list, BUT you can prospect in the marked areas on here http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/as...-Mt-Pilot-National-Park-Prospecting-Guide.pdf

BTW a pan will only set you back $20 and a seive set prob $50 for a good set, but you can get a plastic one at bunnings which will do for $10.

Whoops just read your post again, you're in central Vic, probably the best spot would be Creswick for you, but it's been flogged pretty hard lately, unfortunately, that creek pretty much dries up in summer.

Thanks heaps, yeah I was looking at maybe checking out Daylesford area too. It appears some of the creeks around there are not on the list. I might give the local council a ring just to be certain. I was looking at buying the Garrett deluxe pan kit for $90 to get me started as from what Ive read its a good buy. Might have to buy myself a map and mark off what areas I can and cant venture. So much for thinking itd be like the good ol days. Not expecting to find much, but would be nice to see some specks on occasion.
