I was in Flinders Island for work the last two weeks and had a chance to go fossicking for Killiecrankie diamonds in the last day. Contrary to their name, they are topaz, not diamond, but most are crystal clear, unlike the topaz from NE Tasmania in general, which has a much higher percentage of opaque stones.
There are two main areas: around Killiecrankie Bay in intertidal gravels, and in Mines Creek, SE of Mount Tanner. The tide was wrong for me when I got to the beach at Killiecrankie, so I went to sieve in the creek for 3 hours. Lots of smaller topaz and plenty of crystals in there. There are topaz in the old tertiary gravels in the old mining holes, and in the mine overburden heaps, as well as in the creek where there was relatively undisturbed gravel. Later on I drove back to Killiecrankie and walked the 3 km to the north end of the beach, to the mouth of Diamond Gully. By this time it was 3 pm. I looked around for a while and finally settled down on a promising spot. I opened my backpack and realised I'd left my sieves in the car. It takes 1 hr to walk back the beach, so I had no time to go get them and return for a fossick before I had to head back down to Whitemark for dinner.
Anyway, here is the result of the 3 hours in and around the creek. Some nice cutters in there:
