G'day, my name is Chris, I've been looking at getting into prospecting for a while now but never seemed to find the time or money. I live up in Darwin. I've got a minelab eureka gold on the way, are they any good? I would like to get some beginner advice off the more experienced here and would really appreciate if someone could tell me what I need/what I need to know to get started! Looking forward to reading about your finds and hopefully get out there and get some of my own!

Cheers and happy hunting,

Chris

Welcome Chris. Detector debates are rampant so hard to discuss the pros and cons, best to do some research and see what other people suggest with your machine. I started detecting and actually veered towards highbanking as the gold came easier....in the fact that a few specs in a pan keep you very motivated. A basic panning kit with your detector is a must I beleive. How often you may pass an area wondering if theres gold there...should I detect etc...

If you find a nice little river and you find some yellow, then you bring out the big gun detector and work your way up from there. Having a few different prospecting toys helps break it up a bit, kind of like the 3 different rods I bring fishing. They all catch fish, but sometimes one set up works better for a specific area. Also look into crevicing as that seems to be a good way to some bigger finds. Unfortunately my firt gem hunt made me catch that bug too....very addictive.

Prospecting is really fun and a great outdoor adventure activity. Best of luck!

Peter
