Management plan for Deep Creek fossicking area - 19 February 2014

Council has put a management system in place for fossicking in Deep Creek, ensuring the long term viability of the practice for both locals and visitors.

Social Wellbeing Portfolio Councillor, Cr Rae Gt, said the fossicking zone is accessible for use through turnstiles located at the end of Counter Street or Victoria Street with the gates closed to vehicles to minimise misuse of the area.

"The Gympie region is one of the few areas in the south east to have a designated fossicking area, which is a great drawcard for tourists," said Cr Gt.

"However in the past people have been misusing this area so it has been necessary for council to put a management system in place to ensure visitors can have their own goldrush experience well into the future.

"Under the management plan council staff will monitor use of the area by fossickers to ensure they are not destroying or injuring any trees, are not polluting any watercourse or dam and are not undermining any creek banks.

"It is also important that fossickers refill all excavations when leaving the site.

15years ago they used to dig out the creek to make it easier to reach the gold...there has been no improvement since and wont be for the future...it is a flood prone area so they cant profit from it any other way.

Not sure how the extra 5000 trees they have planted reduces the risk of tree damage ?????.

Yeah that was good Yobskin, it's good to get some feedback from a local. Oh well, I'm sure we can still go there and have fun, yesterday I noticed the grass if real long, and Steve told me just a while ago he saw a big brown snake crossing a track, so we all better keep our eyes out for them.

Who owns that land Yobskin, is it council. Would be good if they slashed the area, by the way, I found some rubbish out there yesterday and took it out, like to keep things clean. Plus I love the bush.

Cheers everyone

One other thing, the few trees I saw yesterday, looked a bit neglected, and didn't see many others, imagine some nice big gums along the banks, and short grass, and some nice tracks, it would be a treat. Just a thought, what if we approached council and asked permission to jazz the place up a bit, i.e. better tracks to the creek, a loan of tractor and slasher. Any thoughts on that guys?

There is a grounds keeper there they slash every couple of months when the grass is 6foot. The trees they planted didnt survive the last flood..donated by energex? Plus wrong speicies!
When it floods the water level is up to the entrance gates and changes everything. They did have paths and bridges but costs to much to replace each year. The funding for deep creek is very limited... i have pushed and have come up trumps. I dug one hole found gold and now it is a communal hole ....i back fill now.
Rubbish is an issue i remove as much as i can. There are alot of dead beats that go there...sometimes you think they are ok till you work them out....
