Is this metal detector on Ebay any good for a beginner ?

Any good suggestions for something in the $250 price range?

Many have used that machine as a beginner. Just be aware that the meter does nothing and it is purely a single tone beep and dig machine. The disc knob just cuts out metals increasing on the conductivity scale eg iron - foil - small gold/5c - 10c - pulltabs - 20c - ring pulls - 50c - $1/$2 - Copper - Silver. Usually you set it at a point that you are happy to dig everything above. I have a (effectively) chinese knock off of one and usually drop a dollar on the ground and adjust it until the tone breaks then back it off until its solid then dig everything that tones solid.
