Someone has given me this rock with some small bits of dull yellow colour in it. I am thinking that it is fools gold but am unsure as the detector goes off when I run it over the rock. I suspect that the band of stone it is in is iron stone and that is why the detector goes off.

Fools gold usually will loose its shine if shaded, yet sparkels well in direct sun, and tends to twinkle when rotated.and gold dampened will usually add to it shine. Shaded or not.

That deep purple looking stuff could have gold in it. I got quite a bit out of material just like that when it was crushed. Mine was from WA. Good luck

Exactly the state it came from

I would soak it in acid to dissolve the ironstone and see what it looks like then. If it still beeps and you are unsure, crack it open for a look or crush and pan.

It makes the detector beep but which detector? Might be the iron stone with a VLF (any TID) but less likely with a PI depending on settings.

Right in the middle of the second pic - maybe gold? I can't see much in the rest.

Smash it :D

I'd check with a magnet to see if it's magnetic. If the ironstone is magnetic then that's probably what's making the detector go off.

If you check it with a magnet and it's not magnetic, I wouldn't crush it.
Google liquid calcium.
Place in Melbourne I used to get it from is out of business.
The calcium will eat anything that isn't gold, so at the end if the cup is empty there is no gold :playful:

Crushing it turns the gold fine, just in case there is a nugget inside, the calcium will keep it whole.
If it's a vein of gold you will just be left with the fine stuff.

detector is a GPX5000. I should run the iron reject right up and see if it goes off with that up.
