Hiya,
I'm Livva and I'm from Melbourne. Nice to meet you!

I've liked the idea of metal detecting ever since I was a little kid and I saw someone doing it on the beach, and am now seriously considering taking it up. Basically I was wondering whether it's worth it? The cost of buying a detector and the permit thing equal quite a bit of money if all I ever find is the occasional bottlecap.

I haven't got around to getting my driver's license so would be restricted to the Bayside area and areas serviced by public transport.

Basically what I'm wondering is if there's enough opportunity to justify the costs? I'd be searching for old trinkets and coins more than gold.

Yes there is but research is the key and beaches in summer produce ok
There are a lot of people doing the hobby but i do it to keep fit and i like the historical finds it may take a while to recoup your cost but start out with a cheap, easy to use detector
Gold is a different ball game and so is wet sand and water detecting so steer clear of these at first
the thrill is you never know what is next and there are many members that could show you the ropes in melbourne

Welcome to the forum Livva. Hunting for coins and relics will never make you rich....But you can certainly expect to pay your gear off with your finds over time. Melbourne is a great location for this activity as you have endless locations to hunt with a bit of research.

There is some quite good budget coin detectors on the market, and a quick read of some of the forum posts may help guide you in any decisions you may make.

A drivers license is in many locations not necessary, as most parks and beaches can be accessed by public transport. Your detector could be packed in a soft case for transport purposes.

The main thing you have to ask yourself is " do i have a passion for the outdoors". If the answer is Yes and you also like a sense of adventure, then metal detecting could be right up your sleeve.

Hope the forum posts help in your decision, and should you like any advice just put it to the forum members, and I'm sure you will get a friendly response.

Best of luck out there,

Cheers Wal.
