Hi Gary, i suppose we all get a bit self conscious when we start-probably because we aren't sure of the regulations. If it's at a park, council will have a notice board at the entrance advising you of the regulations within the park. It's a bit like driving a car solo the first tine--you get used to it pretty quickly.
Jaros - good luck and welcome. :p

Yeah, a detecting buddy is great. When Rod finds a good coin, its great, almost as great as, finding one myself. Doubles your fun :) plus, they sometimes shout a cold drink!

Yes i feel exactly this way.
is why i detect in areas no one can see me.
Which sucks. I just feel to odd doing it in public areas

Haha just close your eyes and imagine what worse things have been perpetrated.... deep breath and detect. Just leave it as though you had not been there (slit method and correct back filling) politely smile with the headphones on and you will be fine.

Thanks every-one for your replies ,I bit the bullet after my post and a couple of replies and went to a park with people in it.I just detected on my merry way and forgot they were even there.Found a couple of bucks but feel like I broke the ice so to speak.
A good friend told me "What they think of me detecting is none of my business" :)
Thanks all
cheers gary

Don't be afraid to talk to Park Workers either, they will soon tell you if they are unhappy with your retrieval methods, though I find most don't care as long as you refill holes & don't make too much of a mess. Most are more interested in what you might be finding.
Ask them too about historical sites in your area because, as they go about their duties they encounter these sites & may know where people congregated in the past.
I find most other detector users are happy to talk to you to & will, most likely, befriend you.

I have never had an issue with the ground staff in parks etc. Like the general public a number of them come up for a chat and to see how I am going. One reminded me that there are power cables and water pipes in the ground. I have had encounters with police and security guards at night. I do a bit of night detecting. All have been positive, pleasant experiences.

The only 'negative' meeting, if it could be called that, was a guy riding past on a pushbike who yelled, "Fill ya effing holes in" and kept on going. I always chat to people who show an interest. Show then my finds and the rubbish I have collected.

I usually try and detect a play ground once a week during work only if there's no kids around because it's easy digging and always plenty of various targets to train my ear with.
When mothers come past I always say hi and if they ask what I'm doing I explain I'm cleaning the play ground of trash and my reward is a couple of coins and good practice for when I can get out to the gold field, they usually look puzzled until I show them the junk that's come from just below the mulch where their kids play and the response becomes a positive one. I felt very self conscious the first time but soon got over it.

I wont walk-up, and detect a kids playground, with kids already in it. Infact you can do just as well, on the grass around the playground.

Once you have done prospecting australia in black, you will never go back?

I will fix my avatar issue :)

Hi all,

I seem to have the same problem as OP, i went out with my x-t705 to a mates house that lives in those old raaf houses and then later to the beach, with mates. it has been almost 2 weeks where i have another expensive device that i only watch youtube videos about and that's it. my mavic pro is the other device which i cant seem to fly alone...

I think after reading where we can and where we can't and what to watch for etc. Is what is making me quit before attempting it.

Any advice or tips or something that can help me, it's getting depressing and frustrating TBH.

Thanks in advance.

mate go to the beach and detect be nice and dont do it right next to people that are enjoying a family day at the beach :8 :8
some say do the high bank some say do the low well at the end of the day you do what you feel is right at the time
you can always go back and finish it later
i move up or down the beach but i try to go around dinner time when most people have gone home which does make it easier ]:D ]:D
when i had my 705 i watched you tube over and over again then just went out
dont be afraid to talk to people that ask questions and answer to the best of your knowledge
i had a family stop and talk to me the other day asking lots of questions the two kids (9 and 10)just stared at what i was doing
so i showed them what to do and gave them Khaleesi (GM100) and the sand shovel to have a play with
just the look on their faces was thanks enough they had a ball we must have spoke for about half an hour before they had to go
so what i am saying is fill all holes take all rubbish you find with you and talk to people if they ask questions
now i dont care what time of day i go just keep a fair distance

Hi Again (Update)

7.62marksman thanks for the advice.

5 minutes after posting, I just said F* it and went, went to a park near me, nothing interesting found. Just a whole bunch of bottle caps and crushed cans, nothing worth keeping, holes filled, couple people walked past, I don't think they realized i was there or what i was doing.

Threw out the rubbish etc. just looking at the park it looked similar to the Werribee tip so i don't think i would have found much there anyway.

On the way home i got a triangle of death on my dashboard (YAY!) timing chain stretched.

this weekend was dreadful (weather and car issues)

Ill keep going out and hopefully start a thread with my finds

thanks everyone,
:)
