Hello everyone. My names Andrew from Melbourne, and I've just got my miners right. I am very very enthusiastic abou starting. I work full time so I want to fill up my entire weekends with mining.

I want a metal detector that can find flakes and nuggets (more nuggets if anything). I know absolutely anything about any of this, except that when I went to a local guy he suggested the Minelab PI at around $3500.

I have a few quick questions.

WHY is it so expensive? I want something that will help me find things that other people have missed, but thats way above my price range.

Where should I start with all this? I know that some people provide lessons, but they are again expensive.

But yeh, pretty much just want an honest review of which metal detector I should begin with.

I am willing to save a couple thousand, but only if I have a garunteed solid decision that I have chosen the right device for me and my location.

Thank you all :)

Welcome to the forum Andy, good luck on the hunt mate, if it's mainly flakes why not just a cheap pan to start with ? :)

Welcome Andy. Believe it or not any of the older GP machines would be a good start. All of the GP/x/z are good for the golden triangle. White's and Garrett make good machines. The gold bug pro 2 is also a great unit and reasonably priced. I'm not sure how it handles ground in the GT as I've not used one there, perhaps others can chime in on that.
