I'm heading down to Tassie for a few days to visit my wife's and my folks. While I'm there I thought I may as well throw in a couple of sieves and look for some Sapphires or other gems.
Would anyone be able to give me a gentle push in the right direction. Would appreciate some advice.
I will be taking my detector, but will be for filling in the mornings on the beach until SWMBO is up and about. ;)

Hi Coyote,

If after gems, the main areas are the north-east tin fields, from Pioneer to Derby but primarily Moorina-Weldborough (sapphires, topaz, zircons), and the Sisters Creek area (zircons and some sapphires) in the north-west. The north-west is mostly private property, and I usually focus on the northeast, which is state forest.
There is a dedicated sapphire fossicking area around Moorina. The sapphires there are small but plentiful and of good colour. Just dig up and downstream of the From Road bridge in the Weld River. Your milage may vary, but other areas in the Weld, Wyniford, Frome, and Main Creek also have sapphires, and I think even some of the eastern watershed creeks around Lottah. I say YMMV because a lot of these areas are far from roads and the bush is thick.
If you go fossicking outside the dedicated area, you should get a prospecting licence from Mineral Resources Tasmania.
Finally, I'm heading up there for a few days on the Australia Day weekend, if you'll be still around. Happy to take you out. I'll be hoping to swing my new Garrett AT Gold if it turns up by then, maybe look for some flour gold around Lisle, and look for gems in the NE rivers. PM if interested.

Hi Miguel,

I will be staying at Ulverstone and heading over this weekend on Saturday. I will only be there for a few days. fly out Wednesday.
I will come back over in a few months also. maybe I can PM you and we can go for a look about then.
I have been to Lottah many years ago. there was not a lot at Lottah back then. 2 or 3 houses. I may head that way for a look about. I would at least be able to do a bit of ground work for the next time I'm their.

Thanks for the reply and advice. Hopefully catch up down there sometime as we normally head down once or twice a year.

Cheers,

Cliff

Ok, that's the park next to the bridge if my memory serves me right. I will most likely stick to the beaches though. thanks Ben.
