Hi, I found these clear rocks while panning in a creek for gold, was hoping somebody with more knowledge could identify them.
They seemed interesting so I collected them

Were they the last rocks left in the pan with gold?

Looks like clear quartz crystal to me as well.

Thanks all, i will do a S.G test on a few and see what the results say. Thanks for the link.
Would the be ok to cut/polish and practise cutting on?

You would probably want bigger and less internal flawed than the ones you have. Walk up or down the creek to find where the bigger, fist sized rocks are deposited to find bigger quartz. Mabey need to dig deeper as well but usually you can eyeball it. Stick an acrylic / perspex window to an end of a 4" diam pvc pipe with a handle on the side to look into the creek for top floaters easily

Thanks Atomrat as you can see it doesn't take me to much to get excited. its the pics of peoples gems that does it

Why would you do that to me ? that's just teasing like a school bully :( but very nice piece lol.. It's specimans like that , that makes me keep digging and digging

Oh wow, nice size. I just thought as some were quiet clear they would be ok but i will expand my search and look for the larger clear peices

They were from the adelaide hills just on a section of creek i found from the road. Does anybody know where else around watts gully gems can be found? Gold seems to be elusive to me so maby gems will show themselves :D

I'd be looking up at the Mt Crawford area if you want to look for both gold and a variety of gems in the same location, just have to be prepared to do some walking and a permit is also required for the day from the Forestry Headquarters. The area has a lot of good source rocks, including granites, gneiss and high grade metamorphics near to or outcropping on surface. Finds can include Common Opal, garnets, beryl, kyanite, and schorl tourmaline. Some gullies will have some flowing water for sieving and panning.

Only Diamonds and topaz have been reported from the Chapel Hill fossicking area in the past, with diamonds being much more of a rarity. The dam there is usually full to the brim this time of year, so a good place to sort through some gear. I've had some luck panning for gold for gold at Chapel Hill, even had a small quartz/gold specimen panned from a washout in one of the rough tracks that dot the area. :)

Awsome info Goldpick.
Thanks for the place to start. I will be heading to watts gully next Saturday to detect so i will do some research before hand and spend some time looking for quality gems around there.
Fingers crossed maybe something other than quartz this time 8)
