Hi all.

I have gradually become more interested in gold mining. I currently work overseas (Australian expat) and now grow tired of working this job. So as I look to not retiring but this as a step before retiring.

I have a friend and we start to look at prospecting (learning the ropes) and then look at getting a lease later on to do say hard rock mining (reef mining). So if anyone has that I would be interested.

Of course we decided to start off with sluicing or metal detecting. My mate said he would prefer the mountains as he actually is orginally a tibetan guy (mountain goat). Does anyone know where the posiedon crew went during the season 7 or 8 snowy mountains trip? I would like to hire a 4x4 and camp up there for a few weeks and have a try. I grew up in Brissy and was in the airforce cadets so I did lots of camping and training in my youth. So I am thinking going to a remote part.

Any advice would be great.

My advice would be to start at somewhere like Slatey Creek in Creswick where you could learn how to sluice or metal detect.
You could also use that time to research the regulations on where you are legally allowed to prospect in Victoria.

Hi Tris and welcome to PA.

I'm afraid that the Snowy Mountains are off-limits for recreational prospecting:

If you check out the Parks Victoria website linked therein, you can find info on the various Victorian parks and reserves where you can have a go at sluicing and/or detecting.
So where did they go during shooting the tv episode? They were just on a prospecting licence.

Yes likely because I am overseas (China). Ahh I lived overseas too long. But I dont think it is a China issue. I clicked the link. No matter i will try to search for the thread manually.

I don't know, I'm not familiar with the Poseidon Crew. Is this it?:

Correct. They did some in the nearby creek and found nice little gold. I suppose I like the idea of exploring.

I suppose I will need to find out the permitted boundaries of where I can go prospecting. They were in high elevation country maybe 500 to 1000metres high.

My budget for buying a lease or into a project might be up to 200,000 Aud. Depends on how much potential it has.

Here's the location they show:
