CFA and MFB are working on rescuing a man who is stuck down a mine shaft in Diamond Creek.

CFA was called to the incident near Fraser Street at 1.30pm and found the man, believed to be in his 40s, about 50 metres down the mine.

The man is not believed to be injured.

Firefighters are currently performing a rope rescue and hope to have him out within an hour.

It's definitely not me :D

I hope he's OK, 50 meters is a long way down.

Quote from the Age News paper.

"Firefighters are working to rescue a man trapped down an abandoned mine shaft in Melbourne's north-east.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Country Fire Authority are currently on the scene at Diamond Creek trying to free the man.

A CFA spokesperson said they were called to the incident near Fraser Street at 1.30pm and found the man about 50 metres down the mine. He is not believed to be injured.

CFA North and Western Metropolitan region duty manager John Maguire said the 49-year-old workman was stuck in the shaft that runs on a 45 degree angle.

He appeared to be involved in excavating activities at the disused mine site, about 400 metres from Fraser Street, Mr Maguire said.

He said the man was properly harnessed when he entered the shaft, but something went wrong and he called for help to get out.

In 2010 an old mine shaft from the Diamond Creek Gold Mine opened in the middle of a busy road, revealing a huge cavity. It was closed up again with steel plates, the Diamond Valley Leader reported.

"There's been some works being done at the site," Mr Maguire said. "It looks like they're trying to redevelop the mine."
