Hi guys, I'm calling on all your collective knowledge here if I could please. Way back when I was in my early 20's I got the detecting bug, went out and bought a detector and had an absolute ball. Never got rich from it but had a lot of fun. Then came marriage, kids, work, etc, and I never seemed to have the time anymore.
Now I'm older and living with my late-20's son, and the bug has hit again. Both my son and I are divorced and happily single so there's nothing stopping us getting out for a day, or even a few days. My question is this.....
We are based in Gladstone, Queensland, and I'd like to hear from anyone in regard to areas that might be worth swinging a detector over within an hour or two drive of home. My son is eager to learn all I know about detecting, fossicking and panning. I have an X-Terra 705 twin coil and wanted to start him out with a good area for coins and relics and progress to gold prospecting later on. From the research I've done of the area there are a few goldfields I'd like to try, especially around the Many Peaks - Kalpower area. I am trying to pinpoint the location of a couple of old ghost towns in that area but can't find much about them in print. One was 6 to 8 k's from Many Peaks and was called Gareebin or something like that.
I would really appreciate any help here guys, and if anyone knows where I can purchase mining maps of this area from the late 1800's please let me know
