Got the same problem Blake. My rock is similar inside to yours but a little lighter, and the outside is the same colour as inside. My detector goes berserk even on full discrimination. Don't think it can be flour gold or microscopic gold as the detector wouldn't pick it up. Maybe it's some kine of ironstone or hematite included in the rock although full discrimination should overcome that.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Yep heavilly mineralised Basalt almost certainly, can be almost impossible to detect some areas like that. I have been unfortunate enough to find a few good looking areas covered in the stuff too. Gives a good signal hey? :(

We have the same sought of rock in some of our ground, don't know whether this will work with your rocks but me and the old boy used one of the rocks with the same technique as the ferrite disk ground balance and it worked quite well at eliminating the majority of them with his GPZ.

That may work GW. Though I've tried ground balancing over a pile of them with the SDC and it made no difference, the 7000 though may just do it. It's a real pain when you research a spot, then turn up up and it's littered with the stuff.

I HATE HOT ROCKS!! the gpz cannot handle them as well at the 5000 or the 4500. They need to address this problem and hurry up and give us some better coils because the 5s and 45s are pretty equal with the elite coils I find

Definitely looks like basalt. The salt settings on the SDC seemed to lessen it enough to detect ok & find gold but having not played around with the GPZ yet I don't know of anything for it to try from first hand experience. Did you try high yield/severe on it?
There are some areas in Central West NSW that even experienced operators still struggle with the damned stuff with GPX's too. With my 5000 I found in some areas you could tune most of it out but would still pick up the odd bit. It's frustrating stuff!
