went to creswick today and was using the 5000 with a Sadie coil, in fine gold all settings fp, detecting on mullock heaps got first target, a tiny bit of bird shot, then got another target which sounded similar but I could tell it was deeper, as I was pulling soil out of the hole I was scanning the soil and was getting hits but could not find any targets at all, it seemed everywhere I scanned there was a target, in the hole, out of the hole but no actual target, I did notice a few bits of charcoal but nothing else, kept digging but then the target in hole disappeared as well, by this stage I was scratching my head wondering what the hell was going on, any ideas?

Gday Jafnob,
I have that experience quite often when the moisture content in the soil is high.
It also happened to me and a friend today about 4 or 5 times elsewhere in the GT.
We overcame most of it by using a rare earth magnet which will pick up tiny bite of iron in the soil which you wouldn't normally see.
