Hi all Im Chris from tassie Ive only been prospecting for nearly a year now and I love it my parents are going on a trip around the mainland for a couple years as Im from tassie I am keen to go with them to find and learn as much as possible Im mostly looking for gold sapphires topaz zircons and amethyst I dont know much at all about the fossicking areas around australia so Im wondering if anyone can tell me where to go for amethyst and zircons and maybe abit about what to look for when finding these specimans cheers chris :)

Gday buster, I'd recon just start by keeping us posted as to where you are or where your heading next and you'll get plenty of directions in time for a dig, are you mobile as you travell, or at the whim of Mum and Dad desires (steering or backseat driving), and you can start your search on here using the search function at the top of page, lots of info on here in threads already to read up on while you wait, when does your big adventure start ? :)

Welcome Chis. What a great time uou have ahead of yourselves. I think if you drop into a tourism centre in any taown you're in they will put on the right path. What type pf transport do you have and gear are yo taking?

Thanks Guys this will help I'll be in the seat between my mum and dad in there mazda t3500 motorhome so I'm worried that alot of places I will not be able to acses our trip will begin at the start of may heading north through bendigo ballarat ect for the golden triangle I'm hoping to stop in at afew places in nsw like Inverell glen innes lightning ridge then will be headed up through the N'T I would love to find some garnets we will be spending alot of time in nsw when the warmer months come back around I've researched alot of ares and the ones I've stuggled with the most are ares to find zircons and amethyst but I don't know anywhere to get these I though maybe fullerton river for zircons maybe Eldorado for amethyst for now this is the best I can come up with :)

G-day Chris, Sorry to hear that you will be travelling 'Between' Mum and Dad...

I have heard that Fullerton River is Closed now... Due to some peoples actions.... I am trying to find out for sure but its not easy.... You can find Amethyst up that way too but you won't get in there with the Camper.... The Camper will restrict you access to a few places but there are other places that you will get into... As Silver said keep us informed of your whereabouts and we will do our best to keep you updated as you go...

Hahaha yes it Will be quite frustrating sometimes but should be great and that's disappointing to hear but that won't stop me from searching somewhere else I was thinking maybe if we stayed at the gemstone caravan park in Eldorado I would have fairly easy foot acses to reedy creek I will have a large pan and sieve a worm pump small hand pick shovel and a bucket I'm trying to learn as much as possible about where to dig for the gems once in the area for gold I will have a garret AT gold detector a pick shovel 14 inch gold trap pan with a 14inch sieve :)

Plenty of zircons and sapphires to be found at the central queensland gemfields if you end up over this way :) good luck on ya travels bud just remember its not just about the destination but its about the journey as well :)

Cheers mate we will be spending plenty of time up that way hopefully we can get in somewhere and yes I will always have why where really there on my mind :)

If you do go searchin for gemstones in the cq gemfields make sure its during the cooler months, as summer is way too hot to be diggin a hole up this way and especially being from tassie the humidity will kill ya ;)

Yes I've watched afew of liz n wals videos on youtube they get some pretty amazing finds I didn't know they were members here though good to know cheers hornet and yes m3 I thought I would struggle in that area although digging on the east coast of tassie after 3 days of rain then a day of hot sun makes things hard I don't think it will be near as tough as what I'll experience up there haha :)
