My name is Jacob. I live in Arizona. I'm planning a 2 week trip in the future to the AU gold fields. I have an AU friend and for a while we have been talking about doing a trip and finally going to make it happen.

Likely we will just metal detect a few place. I'm hoping to learn a little as I work through the process of finding and mapping open claims, registering for my permit to metal detect for gold in AU and enjoy your country.

Kind Regards,

Jacob

Hi Jacobe, you are one of the lucky ones having a friend in Oz and therefore you know where it is. When I was in Hawaii many years agon having breakfast with a Judge from Texas, when I told him where I was from, he said he had been to Austria but it was too cold. hahahaha. Enjoy your stay.

West Gold fields so Coolgardie area is the target. The friend has a camper he will be driving in. I'll likely fly in close to the field. He sadly will have to drive for 3 days to get there.

The plan as of now is to go with an outfitter to rent some decent metal detectors and hopefully get a little training on them or at least know the models we are using in advance so I can read over manuals / watch videos on their use just to ensure I'm using correctly.

With the camper, we want places off the beaten path but you can only go so far. Ideally we are out there at least 7-10 days in the field to play around.

I have some experience back forest camping, I've camped plenty of times and I've also lived in several areas of the US so safety wise I feel I can prep for what is needed but I'm always happy to get advice from people who have been there and done that on what safety items are a must to pack.

For the actual prospecting, I just started the list on what to purchase in the AU before I land. This list is currently small.

2 metal detector - Renting
2 pick - open to recommendations - I want it to be light enough and ideally a belt with the pick or at least have the ability for the pick to fit in a loop on the belt.
2 shovel - will buy two - open to recommendations - I want collapsible and light weight but not cheap. Ideally small spade head.
2 pin pointer - likely renting buy fine buying as well
1 Gold pan - might as well if we come across an area with some good black sands.

Camping wise, I'll break out my last trips list and go off that as it was desert camping. Really nice having a sleep trailer however as it will have power and we will likely have internet with Starlink and emergency calls via SOS on iphone in case of injury/need help.

If anyone has equipment they love to take and have links on where to purchase, I'm happy for the advice. I can also bring this question over to the equipment/gear section.
