Hullo folks - Greg's my name. I have been prospecting for gold for about 7 years now as I was looking for something to do heading into retirement. I have never joined any forum in the past due to personal observations that some forums can be less than friendly - just an observation. A mate recommended this forum to me and I have to say it is friendly and helpful and new members to the game are treated with respect and patience.

I use a SD2200 with a variety of coils. I stick mainly to the golden triangle area with a couple of mates and we usually camp in the Wanyarra area (its free and great facilities). I love the history of the goldfields, especially Victoria as that's where I concentrate on. My biggest success is a 3.5 ounce piece just recently. Mixed with ironstone and some smaller quartz pieces weighed in at just on 4. It was about 8" deep on new ground. I was running the good old 18" DD on the 2200. Smallest pieces are grain sized off mullock heaps.

Will I upgrade? Most definitely but will keep the 2200.

My favourite books which I might recommend to you are;

James Fletts 'The History of Gold Discovery in Victoria'.
S.J Cash "Loaming for Gold' ( a classic and hence my user name.)
any R Brough-Smyth books - pamphlets.

I am not associated with any club or business.

My motto is that 'life is not a dress rehearsal'.

Good luck to you all - Greg.

:) (My granddaughter insisted I put a smiley face on this)

Welcome aboard Greg, glad to have you here. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures .

Hullo Greg & welcome to the forum.
You're right - good bunch of people here.

Thanks Diggerdude. Good to see I'm not the only one sitting at home on a cold night. Next trip is the Dunolly area. I have managed to borrow a mates 5000 to run over a small patch I got last trip with the 2200. It is an odd patch as well - 12 pieces with the biggest being just on a gram. the interesting thing was that the slope was very gentle that stops and falls away again. It runs to the south of a run of north -south reef mines but about 1km away from the last reef. There is no obvious reef or quartz spur that I can see hence the reason I want to have a crack with a 5000 with a Nugget Finder just to see if there any small quartz blows about that may contain smaller gold. I have had a fair walk around and would have expected this type of run to be to the east west of the reef line. But as I said, it was an odd gentle patch. The gold has not travelled far. Plotting the finds showed an indication I may have been on the inside of an old (ancient) creek line but who knows. The only give-away were four old timers test holes of which my son found a small piece on the edge of the old shallow mullock heap, using a 3500.

Thanks Duck. I can only reinforce what most of you are already saying - research - research and research. I have built up a library of numerous Gold related books and I learn something knew all the time. For the Victorians out there and those that visit from interstate - do not believe all the gold is gone. I would say the triangle, Ballarat etc have many hidden surprises for us all as seen by some of the recent finds. I spend a lot of time on new ground with some success but also a lot of days with nothing. I used to love panning but the old knees and back have sort of put and end to that. Creswick (around Slaty) was my favourite panning site and where I learnt to detect.
