if you get a chance to read a great book, called "Pegging the NT" it is well worth it.
It documents the hard ships of the 1870s gold rush in the NT, from scams to misguided adventure.
One of the yarns is about a group taking horse carts and donkeys from south port to bridge creek.
They loaded up and prepared for an 8 day trek to Bridge Creek........40 odd days later, 3 of the group had died, and 2 more escorted back to south port leaving one man with the supplies. When they returned, the one man was almost dead, most of the supplies gone, and he had nearly no ammunition left for his revolver. Some amazing stories in this book.
