Great choice getting the SDC as your first detector. I'm a total noob, i purchased an SDC 5 months ago. I found a small piece of gold first outing. I now have 43 bits of SA gold. With my last few trips finding 8 and 11 pieces. It also helps if you walk over gold.
Also low and slow with the SDC. Spend the extra time and cover every inch of a selected area and try not to cover too much ground too quickly. Overlap every swing and go low and slow. Did i already say go low and slow. Haha. Clearing an area of twigs and stones etc first helps greatly.
I have seen my mate pull bigger gold with his GPZ and deeper than the SDC would find. Like others said coming home with something, even small is better than coming home with nothing at all.
