I am looking for a tracking device which allow me to take notes of the place could be anywhere in Australia , GPS pin point the spot , so I can return there one day

I have a tracker when I leave the car detecting , I have a Bushnell backtracker which is fine for a few stops , but does not tell you where you are, also only holds 4 spots

but are looking for something that I can recall many places , would there be something available like that on the market

if so can you please email the details including cost

You can get away with a cheap GPS or if you have a smart phone (iphone or samsung galaxy etc) you can take a photo and in the info for the photo it will give you the co-ordinates the photo was taken at (as long as you have gps turned on on phone). Insert those co-ordinates into google earth and it should give your location. Simples !

Do you want one that tracks you and leads you back to base, which you have in your basetracker. Or do you just want something that will track wherever you or your vehicle go at intervals and allow you to review these tracks at any given time or point via a web based system as example ?

A good quality hand held GPS with toppo maps is one of the best things you will ever own.

Take a look at a Magellan eXplorist 510, 610 or 710. Not cheap but could be exactly what you're after by the sounds of it. The 610 and 710 offer the ability to track, add way points (with pics), backtracking, gps co-ords, electronic compass with headings, audio recording of waypoints etc, video recording, altitude, route line, point destination line, maps. Only downside is you need to make sure you take spare batteries with you.

I can vouch for the 710... Love it!!!

We have the Garmin Oregon 550 with toppo maps (it just packed it in a couple of days back after 5 years) that takes a geotagged photo but the camera does a better job. We have a waterproof/shockproof Olympus Tough. As long as you have GPS turned on every photo is geotagged and with the photo it easier to remember the spot. You can go back months or years later and take a look at the photos in the computer to find the coordinates where it was taken.

You don't need phone signal to take photos, as long as you have GPS turned on, done it plenty of times with an iPhone and Samsung, still gives you co ordinates. Garmin Etrex 10 does the job for us, tracks where we go, easy to mark places of interest and to retrace our steps etc., great little unit, easy to use.
