hey guys the water has dropped massively in Ballarat/Creswick in the last fortnight to the point where I spent two hours searching for enough water to run the Highbanker the other day. decided tyo get me a AM Boss AU Trap Sluice to play with. All i can say is out of the box it worked very well took me a while to get it dialed in due to poor water flow but once I freed up some rocks up stream I was able to accelerate the water to a good level and one that happened boy was i impressed.

I hear people talk about them all the time and for the nominal $175 I paid for it from E. E. Day & Sons its money well spent.

The best proof was a very flat flake of gold that got caught in the first drop, amazing this things weighs nothing i mean doesn't show up on the scales at all and when i dumped scoop after scoop in the sluice it just hung on like a champ, I only ran maybe 6 pans of classified to 1/2 " through it and caught about 20 pieces of gold, the big surprise for me was the mercury balls. I've never seen balls of mercury holding in any sluice before this sluice will now be my testing sluice that will find a permanent home in my truck.

Took a few photos for the pudding.

Looks good Golddigg.

I'm going to check whether they sell online I wouldn't mind starting with one of those. I live out west in Queensland and its hard just trying to find the material to build a wal highbanker which I said I would do, The lightweight of the sluice really appeals to me and the price. I note your comments about the flow rate and find that info quite handy to remember.

I haven't attempted any gold fossicking yet and can't wait to have a crack at it.

Cheers

Lam

The smaller ones work very well also for prospecting. I find them a great way to speed up concentrating a bucket of wash, much better than panning.

Hi GD,
I have the "Foreman' model, might be just a fraction smaller, it's great to see the small specks just resting in there.
Only trouble is lack of water, tried taking a couple of buckets home and just spraying with a garden hose but not really enough flow.
Does E E Day sell other models, there is I'm sure one that is suited to much slower/lighter water flows would be keen to try that as a unit to clean up at home (alas my spots are almost totally dry, mozzie riddled puddles at best, but a good chance to dig sometimes inaccessible holes).
Cheers Tom

they onky had the tiny one and the boss when I went in mate, im planning on building a recirculation setup for this sluice ill keep you posted.

Most people seem to classify when using McKirk sluices but I just shovel rocks etc straight into my Boss. Apart from removing quite big rocks which tend to stay in the sluice the rest just goes out if the flow is strong. Does anybody else do this and have they checked to see if any gold is being lost? I found tiny specks remain in mine.

I find with my boss that pebbles over a certain size cause the material in the riffles to blow out as they pass it. All I can see is the black sands getting washed away, but I can easily imagine smaller gold doing the same. OK for a little bit as the gold will get trapped in the next riffle, but after a while you might be blowing gold out of your bottom ones.

I classify down to 1/2 inch.......runs a lot smoother I reckon

Just saw your recirculation set up good stuff! Well done, I never thought about the need to slow the turbulence down at the entry of the boss, that's something I will have to play with the high banker conversion. Seems the boss needs a fair bit of flow I was looking at a 3000 gph bilge pump but even this might be inadequate! Any suggestions? Am half way through the project so when complete will try and upload some photos for the first time! Might have to pinch the wife's computer as the I pad doesn't seem compatable with posting the photos, cheers and good luck

hey mate my only tip would be more water is better than not enough and miners moss really helps smooth the water out. cant wait to see your pics

Cool thanks mate, am open to all suggestions, it's my first build and am doing it on the cheap but I think it will work, have tried to design it so it can easy be separated to just use as a river sluice when flow is sufficient
