How accurate are google earth coordinates?

Last weekend I was trying to find a few spots that I had put into my magellan 310 prior to leaving home. I know that once I was at the camp I was only a couple of k's away from these positions/old workings but the coordinates I used from google earth said I was 24 k's away.

Its not so much the co-ordinate system itself but rather the google earth imagery which is often out of alignment with its co-ordinate system.

Your coordinate systems/datums should be set to WGS84 on the GPS and after turning on, you need to let your GPS "settle in" and get a good lock under clear sky before saving any waypoint.

As a test save a point, then save a second point at the same location. Compare the results ...and if they agree then you should be OK!
