Very interesting mate!
When I was working for an exploration company in WA there was talk of sampling the vegetation for anomalous gold values. Back in those days we did soil sampling to ppb parts per billion and rock sampling to ppm parts per million but now the technology allows sampling to even finer levels - parts per trillion
