G'day and welcome to PA,

If you want to search for Find Gold then I would get either a Whites GMT or the Makro Gold Racer these will find the ultra fine Gold and then if you want a multi-purpose machine then I would be getting either the Whites MXT All Pro or the Makro Racer 2, just be careful with the Makro's because last month there was a few people having problems with them,

For use in mineralized Ground you might need to buy one of these,
If you just want to get the small shallow Gold then the minelab SDC2300 would be the order of the day But if you want to find the bigger deeper Gold then maybe you should be looking at either the minelab GPX4500 or the 5000,

hope this helps, john.

If you want to fast track getting a few nuggets the SDC2300 is certainly the best detector for finding small nuggets. The GPX 4500/5000 are excellent also but will miss a lot of very very small nuggets and finely disseminated specimen gold. If you want to go the whole hog, the GPZ7000 is the best gold detector ever made without doubt.

Stick with a Minelab detector and you can't go wrong. It all depends on your budget though.

As Heatho said, I bought an AT GOLD as my first detector as at the moment I'm more park/beach hunting due to loss of licence, When I'm ready to buy my next detector I will be going for a SDC2300 they seem to find lots of small gold which was probably missed by other detectors so price wise is my first choice. or if you have the money and the time to learn, buy a higher end minelab, from what I understand the sdc2300 is pretty much a turn on and go machine. Go through the show and tell posts and you'll see how many nuggets sdc find, If your serious about it MINELABS seem to handle Aussie mineraliseation better than the competition.
I like Garrett but I've read the ATX has some issues with our soil. I believe minelab have good after sales service
Good luck making that decision it is a difficult one to make. :)
