Go get the Gold

G'day all,

I thought it best to just sign up and say g'day and have a chat about one of my plans that's in the pipeline. For the past 10-15 years I have often longed to travel Australia prospecting for gold. I have done alot of research over the years, unfortunately I don't remember it all (insert a few too many beers here). Now I find myself in a position where I can set out and chase my dreams and the life I am after. I want a home on wheels (troop carrier) to access more remote parts of Australia, and I want to commit to turning a $ from gold prospecting with a metal detector.

I understand that many a man and woman has dreamed of striking it rich and come home empty handed. I understand that I could die out there. If I decided to take this route, I am going into this as a do or die so to speak. The one thing I found interesting over the years, is every time I talk about this dream in conversation, almost EVERYONE says that it can't be done, or just laughs. I guess this just makes me more determined to prove them wrong. Like I said, it's been a dream of mine for a long time and I am prepared to give it all that I have got.

I've signed up here to get some knowledge, chat to some people, and generally get an idea as to if this is the path I go down or not. I have a few other plans in the pipeline, it's just a matter of choosing the one I think I will enjoy the most, and grow the most from.

I'm still young (33) and have no family or missus or commitments etc. I'm based in QLD but once I'm set up, I will head somewhere I think I can learn the most about prospecting from first. Basically, I've come here chasing a dream and what I consider the adventure of a lifetime, and hope to learn from a few of you and decide if it's the life for me. Look forward to chatting.

With no commitments I say why not, what area of QLD are you in?
North QLD is a big area with lots of Gold why not start here?

Google WWOOF this maybe a way to get around with a bit more comfort or plenty of work out there & no-one prepared to do it could be a way into good "Gold" country.

Cheers, I live an hour out of Bris in a place called Boonah. There are a few minor gold areas around, there was a place out here called Glendon on the Thanes creek I think, just out of Warwick, I seen they do Gold Detecting courses.

I'd definately consider the Northern QLD as a starting point... by the WWOOF do you been working in return for food and accomodation like the backpackers do to extend their 2nd visas?

You could do a road trip to Kilkivan in the burnet region. I got some gold while panning there in 2005 when I was on honeymooning with the wife. Great spots, good wine and cheese and great history. Downside maybe getting locals to tell you any good spots to try .

Yes mate " Willing Workers on Organic farms" not restricted to organic farms, from what I know, 4hrs/ day entitles you to room & food worth looking at as it is an in & that is all you need in NQ, a guy I know found 100ozs in 12 months NQ up to 4 days/week

Stop it, you're giving me the fever and I havn't even got my hands on a detector yet

A man would need some serious commitment, to be honest with the way prospecting is across the country you'd have to be very lucky or very determined. I'm not taking a shot, in fact i think its a great idea, and if its something that has taken a hold just dive in head first! We will only regret more those things we didn't do than the ones we did. Logically working for wages in a regular type job is the safer more consistent option, but you can go down that road anytime right? There's an old Chinese fable about the general wanting to inspire the troops to victory, so after they landed on the shores and started inland the general burnt the boats. It was victory or perish, and i believe in life if we follow that same principle we can succeed at any dream. When your ready burn your boats, and have a magnificent adventure.
