Grubbygold, don't worry about loosing gold while digging, there's plenty to be found in the creeks.
Dig a hole and pan every 5 shovels until you hit the bottom. Pan what you can get off the bottom of the hole. If there's not much gold ( for that hole ) and you can't go deeper..hopefully one of those before pans told you what layer the gold was on and go back to that depth of digging.
If you hit the bottom of the creek and still only a couple of flakes, move upstream or downstream ( up probably better ).
Before I set up my sluice, I pan for at least two days sample holes. These go right down to the bottom of the creek and at 10m or 20m intervals for about 1-2km.
If there's specks, there's a large deposit somewhere
