After seeing the previous thread on breaking open some quartz, I thought I'd have a go at breaking up a large specimen of quartz with a few bits of gold on the outside that's been sitting on my shelf for a few years now.

What a cracker inside, gold all through the quartz in small ferruginous cavities (crystalline gold), plus some free gold in the actual quartz itself. As you can see, there is also some galena occuring in the quartz as well, sometimes there is also chalcopyrite and rare bornite too. I should dolly it up, but I think it looks better in its natural state. ;)

Wow - now that is the right colour :p

Must have been a strong shelf, great specimen, you gotta be happy with that !!!

The photos weren't the best, they don't really do it justice unfortuntely. Still, they will look good in my rock collection. :)

Here's a closer look at one piece:

Did you find that with a detector or other methods ?

Could you tell it was gold bearing by weight or was it not obviously distinguishable from your average Joe Blow lump of rock ?

No detector, it was picked up from a known quartz reef in the area, most of the reef had been weathered away and had no depth to it. I had private access to a pile of rocks excavated from that location, so I already knew there was a good chance of gold amongst the pieces.

Thanks for posting - that is quite interesting.
Any chance of a close up on some of the crystalline gold?

Wow its great to see some Quartz examples onya! I have a bit of a better idea of what to look for!
