G'day everyone,I 'm a newbie, just stumbled across this site this morning. My name is Darren,I'm 50yrs of age, married with 3 adult kids and live in the Maitland NSW area.I've been into gemstones and fossicking since age 10.Most of my spare time is taken (still working a full time job so spare time is limited( up with working our opal claim at Carters Rush in the Grawin area interspersed with fossicking for sapphires and topaz in the guyra area with my 2 sons. After having viewed Wal and Liz's videos on utube am keen to give the Grabben Gullen area a go.Anyways good fossicking to you all and I hope our paths may cross somewhere out there enjoying our great pastime.Cheers Darren

Welcome to Prospecting Australia Darren.

Good to have another Hunter guy on the forum and I'm certain you'll bump into fellow members while out detecting or fossicking. We have a camping trip coming up on the January long weekend at Nundle if you're interested in coming along and meeting some of the guys https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3547

Please don't hesitate to ask questions and join in on discussions.

Nugget.

Welcome to the forum Darren. Sounds like your prospecting has taken you to many great locations, and mixing Sapphire hunting with Opal digging would certainly keep you on the busy side. Great that you bumped into this site and hope this forum gives you some interesting reading.

Grabben Gullen gives up some great Sapphires for those who persevere, but since the last 2 big floods a lot of the stones have been scattered amongst the gravel bars, and can be quite challenging to locate. Best of luck if you venture to the region and hope your sieves are full of colour.

Cheers Wal.

Welcome to the forum Darren. :)
Guyra is a nice area to fossick as long as it does not get too cold or the water too deep. Might bump into you around there some time.
