Fossicking around Maryborough, Victoria.

Hi all, I am flying up to melbourne mid this month to go on a family prospecting trip.
My grandad wants us to all help him dig out a hole he swears has something at the bottom of it, and just generally have the "one more big family trip with everyone" before... you know....
He knows everything possible about gold, However has never really been a fossicker, where I am the other way around (without the knows everything possible...).
I am originally from NSW, but now live in Tasmania, and have not had any experience in vic at all.
I was wondering if anybody knew of any spots around the Maryborough area that i would likely find gems in? (sapphires are my favorite gem to hunt) I am pretty useless with the detector, and i would like to make him proud by finding some nice gems. Or at very least a good creek to get myself stuck in and provide him with a good laugh.

Ah, Tassie, God's own country. Spent 20 yrs down there Jessiy, great place. I've never heard of gems from Maryborough, but I'm sure the locals will be able to give you the heads up if there is anything around. Seems you have to be a local to know where the really good stuff can be found - apart from that we, blow-ins just stumble upon what we might find. Good luck.
