I'm getting older as we all are. My wife and I are considering buying something like a Samsung Gear 2 or the likes. Just wondering if anyone here has one or could recommend something similar that actually works. I mean they are not cheap. Just be good to keep track of the old ticker as it's done a lot of work so far.
We just want an honest break down.

My wife swears by her Fitbit. However, we both go to the gym 4 times a week and lift weights. We are both in our mid to late 50's.

Imho, just get active and do some strength training. Passive cardio (counting steps) does not do much. Instead of paying for one of those devices just lift some weights!

exactly, you know when you have had a good workout....dont need a bracelet to confirm it.

I have been to the Dr more times in the last 3years than I care to think about ...think cancer.. I walk 15 to 18 kays a day in my job and my wife has been an Ambo for 13 years. We just want to keep a track of our health.
How do you know what your heart is doing unless you continually monitor it, how do you know if your heart rate has been going down over several weeks.

Any constructive feedback on these devices would be appreciated.

Edited for distance walked per day.

My wife and I swear by our Fitbit Charge HR (newer model now available) .... apart from steps which any cheaper unit can do this also measures real time heart rate, resting heart rate and sleep patterns.
I use it mainly to track changes in heart rate (resting and actual) clearly see how something like the flu impacts on heart rate. You can also get more serious and tract calories, water etc.
Think the new one also has GPS to review your movements.
They won't save your life but just may provide an early signal of an irregularity.
Plenty out there to choose from.
Cheers Tom.

Thanks for that Tom. That's really the kind of thing we wanted to know. Also any bad points as well, we just want to evaluate. The reviews on www. well you sometimes don't get an honest opinion. The tracking of irregularities in heart rythem is the thing to watch.
Thanks again.

Hi Wishful,

I used my wife's fitbit for a little while. I found it to be really useful. I'm a bit of a stats nerd and have been keeping track of my exercise/weight for years. The fitbit added and extra element to those stats.

I liked the way the fitbit tracks your sleep and heart rate. It is interesting to look back over the data and keep track of where you are at.

The one thing I found was that during high intensity exercise, the heart rate tracking didn't work properly, which was a bit of a bummer. Maybe it was the way I had it set up, but that is what happened to me. Others may have found differently.

I haven't used Samsung or Apple watches. But they cost a fair bit extra. So it might be worth starting with a fitbit and then if you like it, maybe look at alternatives or just stick with the fitbit.

There is a reviewer called DCRainmaker. He is one of the best reviewers out there. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/ has no affiliations, so you can trust his reviews, it may be worth taking a look.

I reckon one thing to get if you can, is something that is waterproof. But then that costs extra. But you can wear it while you are working the river!

Most phones will do it for you.

The Samsung Gear 3 is the one i'm looking at getting.

I have had a few others in the past, they have all been good. it's great tracking your steps, and you have no excuse when you have a lazy day and the steps are down, you get off your ass and go for a walk.

If it motivates you, 100% do it :)

I use a polar heart monitor & go to gym several times a week. There is a heap of info on heart training range zones to achieve different things and for your age group. If fit bit gives you the info you want , get it.
Try a gym. A friend started gym with me, he needed to lay down after mowing the postage size front lawn and after 12 months was able to mow both front & back and go to gym also lost many kilo. Not your situation I realise, however there are many benefits of lifting weights correctly.

Bad points, pulse is not sensed by electrical impulse & can be a little inacurate under specific conditions.
Good points, for most of us the inaccuracy is not critical and if it keeps you off the lounge, fantastic, buy it.
Kogan occassionally have these things below retail & sales are only 3 weeks away.
