Finally it's happened. My first pre dec and it's silver a 1962 sixpence and in my own back yard have just bought a queen slander built in 1927 have been unearthing loads of relics it is good practice for fine tuning my digging technique. I don't know how you guys do it my yard looks like a gang of gophers have been through it. A lot of the techniques that should be practiced don't work when the ground is like grannit. Could someone tell me best way for cleaning coins I have a lot of ferrous relics soaking in olive oil But should I be doing something else with coins? I will upload some pics once I have dissed this I phone out. Yee ha

Good on ya Lester - you broke the bubble!

Cleaning coins and relics is a popular topic here - copper coins are best soaked in olive oil for as long as necessary to clean them up followed by soapy water.

We have been cleaning silver coins using electrolysis - you tube has some videos worth watching - followed by using dry bi-carb to rub the muck that is lifted/loosened by the electrolysis.

Of course coins are worth a lot less if cleaned so I would only be cleaning them if they are really bad.

Relics - well that is another matter - it would come down to what they are made out of (what type of metal)

We really like pics and can help you out if we can see what you are trying to clean....

Thanks for that mate I am stoked I had started to think I was the worlds worst detectorist you would not believe the stuff I have dug up in the yard. Who needs lawn : ) will keep posted and have a crack at photos. It took me a while to work out but low and slow is the go

Every lawn needs to be aerated once in a while  and your own is a good place to practice and get to know your machine.

Well done on your first silver, now the drought has broken you can get out there and find some older ones. 8)

That's exactly what I did when I got my first detector, the missus wasn't too happy! :p Congrats on your first pre-dec, there are advantages to owning an older property. :)

Wicked mate, can't wait for the illusive silver coins that keep avoiding me!

Breaking news. After doing some research I found out in the nineteenth century where my house is used to be market gardens. I have just unearthed a well that was documented as being in the vicinity. May need a bigger shovel

Dug an old well on our property out as a boy, found an old pipe and pocket knife but heard of stories of a pistol and full wine bottles being recovered by our neighbours, so you never know what is down them until you look.

Remember gas is deadly.

I know this will sound corny, but wouldn't it be sweet if it was used as a wishing well! :p :D
