I know there will be variables but I have read a number of times of people relating size of coil to depth of detection.

So if I buy an SDC2300, which to me seems like a good newbie detector, then the detection depth of the 8" coil will be roughly 8 inches? Or am I reading things wrong? I am still trying to learn all the techno talk like mono coils etc so please keep it simple. :D Mac

Depends on the size of the target, but 8" is pretty consistent for max depth. Yes you will find targets deeper, and if they are solid and large it will even surprise you a bit. But most gold found with the SDC will be 4" and up. Also power and coil type will matter relating to depth. Ground coverage is another thing to consider with coil size.

There are a lot of experts on here so they will probably correct me, but it is what I have found with my experience using the SDC.

I heard someone talking about a guy who changed the coil size on the SDC. Wow. But I think the SDC is good for what it is and does. Coil size matches its size and task.

On a coin size target a Concentric on a VLF can normally see down to 1 and a 3rd to 1 and a half times their size in depth but DD's on a VLF normally the depth equal to their size, On a PI a Mono can hit double their size in depth and PI's with a DD can hit up to 1 and a half times their width in depth.

hope that helps.

Ridge Runner....thanks for that info. It's all a bit 'techo' for me but it's a great question.

With a Minelab SDC2300....what type of coil does it have...a mono or a double d??

Thanks in advance

Well what I was saying is the SDC has an 8" Mono and it is a PI, so it is it has the horsepower to hit coin sized targets up 16".

So 8"x2 = 16" because a PI can normally go twice as deep as the coil is wide,

hope that explains it a little better.

As Per Magilla post above and will throw in Soil Type , EMI and construction of nugget or speci . I had always intended to send my SDC off to Ismael Jones ( when out or warranty ) to ask a 12 inch to be fitted but having added a 4500 to the stable have decided to leave it as designed . I have found it to be an excellent newbie machine and depth it can achieve can be quite amazing under the right conditions.
Reckon Johns post re depth is a good rule of thumb as there have been 2 oz + slugs detected with an SDc at 16 - 20 inches reported elsewhere . Have found plenty of shallow gold and attached photos of three of my deeper SDC speci's to show how the variables can effect ( in my opinion ) :) Cheers and good luck

Photo 1 : perfect crisp morning with zero EMI , SA ironstone speci 1 gram Au 8-10 inches faint signal machine run flat out 5

Photo 2 : same patch different day mild EMI , ironstone speci 1 gram Au 5 to 6 inches just a faint signal machine run on 4

Photo 3 : Tarnagulla Vic speckled ironstone speci 1 gram Au approx 6 inches SDC screamed think was running in 3 , GPX 4500 tested with 11 "mono 2 -3 " at best

Stuth that is some nice Gold, That last one looks like a brown and Gold Opal, that is too good to break up.

thanks for posting them,

John.

the main factors for depth are target size and coil size when on the PI machines.

In general but not always the case...
Larger coils can see/hear larger targets deeper than the smaller coils
Smaller coils are better at seeing/hearing smaller targets at better depths than larger coils (this is sensitivity)

I would say the SDC with an 8" coil can still see a large target deeper than 8 inches... but has better sensitivity on the smaller targets within the 8" range. Its dynamite for this purpose as far as I know having never run one! Just always get asked to make coils for it but it is already serving a purpose.

If you want a PI detector with more versatility then the GPX range is the go (IMO) as there are many different coil types and sizes to help you cover the ground well in the medium budget range.

Hope this helps...

Thanks to everyone for their posts. Learning learning all the time. Still yet to get the detector but hopefully will have some small idea when I do get it. This forum is great.

HoudiniHarry, Bacchus and Ridge Runner,

Thanks guys...very useful information !! Great pics. MY few finds with my SDC have all been sub-grammers...smallest being .02gm

Well if you are finding them that small you won't be missing much,

J.
