i found this last year and have kept it aside in the safe just incase.
lsat time i was asked if it was a cut or an impression.
i finally got around to getting a jewlers loop.
to me its looks like and impression as i noticed where its marked the australia lettering it look like an imprint (squashed).
its a 1988 2$ and the imprint fits that of a 1c perfect (outter rim)
would be cool if this was indeed a genuine error $2 coin.

I always get SusS these days as so many fakes around and or PMD.

Lots of errors on ebay but many are PMD.

i would chat to a real collector or 2.

you guys are not going to believe this..
long story short. just had shoulder op so cant go anywhere.
my butcher delivered me my meat. i pay with cash he gives me change (10$ and 2$)
its on the bench all arvo.
just now i pickup the $2 and looked at the date, its 1989..
the one i posted today and found last year is 1988
heres the unbelievable coincidence...
this 2$ 1989 has a similar ring tooo!!!!!!
will post a pic when the phone charges.

guys check your 1988/1989 for these errors or 1c diametre rings

I had the same sort of ring on a $1 coin where a 5c coin would fit in perfectly, i posted it here

I thought the same as you treasureman but i was told it was PMD which the more i looked at it the more it made sense, i got a tooth pick out to see if i could feel a defined dent, dip or bump in the coin but it was smooth.

My theory is that the coin has been sitting around for along time as a stack of coins maybe on someones dresser or something. And seeing both those coins minted 88 and 89 fits this theory that a 1c coin could have been sitting on these coins for a long time creating that mark. Just a thought but that is my theory. :)

Certainly not a miss die imprint as it appears in the pics as a cut line as opposed to being stamped...

Dunno.....a bored Security guard on the graveyard shift?...

There is a $1 coin that was over-stamped on a 10c die back in the late 80's or early 90's iirc...

This is just a damaged coin and only worth face value....imo
