I have a question on today finds, I found a Penny coin in good condition about 4" Down, Then about 12ft
Away I found another Penny coin in same soil condition about 4" down again but it is badly corroded.. Can anyone tell me why this happens??
I also found my first 9ct gold ring and a 1924 Half Penny so it's been our best day yet searching :D

Danmuss I've found that sometimes coins are found under places that must have been cleaned regularly with chemicals mixed in water, these chemicals have dripped through the floorboards and eventually changed the grounds ph. or just made it toxic in general to some metals depending on how long they have lain in the ground. This would account for finding good coins in good ground and badly corroded coins not far away in ground that has been contaminated in some way by an unknown chemical change within the soil. This is the conclusion that I have found in relation to some of my own searches, I hope this is of some help for you in your own circumstances with your coin finds.

Hey mate
yeh I understand what your saying, but I found these in park land trees, found lots of stuff from coins to gold ring, this coin was the only thing corroded badly.. its strange but thanks for that info anyways as I didn't know :D

You never know what was there before, some times it's pretty hard to read the ground, and you never know what's been dumped anywhere in the past that will affect just one little area. I think the only way we would ever get a clear picture of what's really happening is if we checked the ph. of the soil when we find a coin like that, both in the coin hole and again a few metres away, and record soil type and ground conditions as well(that way we will know if it is an acid or alkaline reaction). The easy part of that would be the collecting of the samples(take them home to check them). I will do that when I find one in like condition, as I always carry snaplock bags for finds anyway, and I don't think a ph. kit is too expensive(I probably need one for the garden anyway).
