I and other GPX users are getting a regular 'coil overcurrent' message on the 4500 display. A bit of research shows this is quite normal and is the 4500s way of protecting the detector. The 5000s get the same message. The manual states to wait a short period of time and restart. I was initially worried it was only happening with Nugget Finder coils but as I said - its all quite normal with a variety of coils. I do make sure when restarting to have the coil off the ground - that seems to sort it out. Be interested to hear if anyone else is having this issue. There does seem to be a pattern - mono coils, highly mineralised ground (Victoria).

hi mate
the only time that ever happened to me was with the early pulsemate coils before they made the gpx coils, went back to my normal coils and all good.
I reckon if it keeps happening with the same coil I'd get it checked cause even though it's a protective measure there must be a reason it happens more with that coil.

Hey Trashy - its doing it with ML, and Nfs. I read a thread by Jonathon Porter on another forum because I was worried too - its all good. Just one of those things. Having said that, the 4500 is going in before the cooler months before I hit the fields hard.

G'day loamer,

Yep, happened to me at Stuart Town (NSW) while out near an old mining area that was absolutely covered with broken up sheets of rusty tin and fencing wire etc. hidden in the tall grass -pretty much a dectectorists worst nightmare in any gold area. Had the NF Sadie 8x6 on and the machine just threw me the Coil Overcurrent warning each time I tried to switch it on anywhere near that area. Had to walk several metres away from all the trash back into clear ground to get it to turn on normally.

Didn't cause me any real panic as I knew what the issue was. I should have tried it there again with the ML 11" DD running Iron Reject just to see what would happen.

Good learning experience.
Cheers,
Shauno.

Thanks Shauno - I ran into a bloke who was having the same problem - he thought there was a major fault. Same issue - mono on mongrel ground.

Happened to me yesterday when I had a large sheet of tin under the grass when I turned it on

Flicked it off , walked away and it turned on with no problem

It's a protection device that saves damaging the machine in case of any voltage spikes coming through the coil I guess
