Hazelwood Power Station has started to shut down.

3 of 8 power generators were shut down today 3 more tomorrow and the last 2 on Wednesday. Over 2000 jobs gone when the site shuts Friday :N: :N: :N:.

Today 20,000 homes in Vic lost power possibly some of these power outages could be from weather events. I doubt all were because of weather though, the wind was consistent but not what I'd liken to causing major power outages.

A sign of the times for what lies ahead I'm thinking, dodgy Dan (Vic Premier) doing his finest work again :N:.

Bugger ........................ the pondage used to be great for some winter skiing with it's warm water ...................... only problem was as built to catch the cooling winds used to whip up a bit rough on a windy day

I used to swim in the cooling pond years ago there.
Shame its closing down.

Any word on whats going to pick up the slack?

Nothing arranged to pick up the slack that i'm aware of. They stocked the pondage with Barramundi to boost tourism put a closed season in place to allow the Barra to grow. Then pulled the plug on the whole operation, bloody bureaucrats hey no common sense.

With the Automotive industry closing down and now this, middle aged and the younger workforce from these industries will find it and are doing it tough.

Any cold snap or heat wave is going to cause some issues I think. Time will tell but we only have to listen to our crow eating cousins to get half an idea.

Given the issues with the juvenile detention centre and the need for it to be overhauled and replaced. Any one with common sense would suggest build it in place of Hazelwood give the community a new employment option. Oh no that sounds like too much common sense, the new site for the juvenile detention centre is placed in the fastest growing municipality where the rate payers don't want it and it's nowhere near Hazelwood. Talk about a golden opportunity for a community that needs an industry to underpin it, better stop now it's driving me insane.

There is No Plan for anything in the near future to take up the slack!
As soon as the Halewood Power Station closes and they start dismantling it, the anti coal people and greenies will be calling for the closure of Yallorn W Power station.
Its all part of the evil governments plan to crash the economy and cause hardship.

A economic expert wrote in todays media that residents of Victoria, SA, New South Wales are going to need to install their own back up power supplies as the age of reliable and cheap power is now gone for ever.

Such a shame that such an illformed group of idiots ( Greenies ) can use the false media to force their hidden agendas and lies on us all.

Agreed well said :Y:

Yeh, I don't get it either LL. There are more population than ever before, so the answer is to shut down power supply? We were conned when the big push for individual solar power was instigated. I was told I'd pay for the panels in 20yrs. Yep, only those who could make the decisions decided to up all the costs so the share holders could get an increase in dividend. Result....... higher costs.......for sending out letters to say how great they are. We have been conned. I wonder what would happen if we all decided to instigate a "class action" against the owners of the power companies AND the govt. I wonder how long it would take for some of the movers to run for cover.

Rant over.

Morons in power, no replacment stratergy.Greedy Power Compnys. :N: :N:

Greedy Power companies?

Corrupt government wanting to take essentials like utilities of people all part of destruction of Aussie way of life.
The current Electricity crisis will soon be joined by the shutting down of East Coast Natural Gas industries, this will force many more industries to close down and relocate overseas.

The only good thing is i may get the dole and be able to prospect more than what i do now. :Y:

Yeah AF a refurbishment is what was needed, the power generators have served their 50 year purpose. The Fed and local gov don't want to be proactive and spend sensibly for the future imo no matter which party holds government.

Off grid is looking like the way to go.

I live and work(for now) in the area. All I can say is its a effing disgrace . Yes it was a business desicion from the company that owned it but I'm pretty sure our corrupt so called leaders have had a fair bit to do with it . From what I've been told the decision was made many months before anyone was told about it and that was why a lot of the managers had put there homes on the market well before any announcement was made. Government sounded surprised, please don't insult our intelligence you self serving pieces of crap. Once again our so called leaders listen to the pressure of minority groups without any regard to the general population. Yay there going to build leisure centers in the valley( thatle effing help people without a job, they can go for a swim and drown there sorrows)but yay were going to spend billions on upgrading the snowy scheme which is essentially just a water battery storage but makes the ill informed all warm and fuzzy.how about some reall info in what the rest of the world is doing in regards to building coal fired power stations and ( don't nesesarily think it right) then people might realise what we do in Australia means sweet f all in the scheme of things. :(

Forget about the Dole, if you don"t want to do anything, become a Politicion; better money.
Greedy power companys; they increased the Service Charge by 50% in 3 years, $ 1.50 per day 365 days / yr now. They don't have to sell power.

Majority of increases have come from the middlemen not the generators.
Sorry was going to try to keep out of this as its a bit close to home but had to get a bit off the chest :D

Don't count on the dole, welfare seems to be government piggy bank.

My accountant says the evil corrupt government just lends the money to pay the dole, then slugs hard working tax payers more to pay for the interest.
I am so sick of working and paying taxes and getting nothing in return.
The pittance you get in super won,t pay for your retirement and when you work full time you get little if any prospecting time.

The dole is the way to go pays petrol and expenses.

Guys, the governments part in this was done years ago when they sold off the state owned power stations. The face they are now being closed has next to nothing to do with the government, greenies, evil plans etc - they aren't 'commercially viable' for the owners to keep going/rebuild, so they are closing them. Private enterprise, not government making those decisions.

Government can always step in and take over in the interests of the Taxpayers?
Tony Abbot suggested it, but old Turncoat refused, i read today old Turncoat is 10 % down in polling behind the Dirty Carbon Tax Rat Bill Shorten.

We are pretty much screwed.
