Found this at a Chinese stall at Caribbean markets Melb. They are nice guide but also an example of fake Chinese coins that are getting around - take them out of the pack - rough them up a bit and hey presto - 'genuine coins'.

They are a nice find on the goldfields as well and still turning up.

(Derrick J was not at the markets unfortunately. For those in the know - you will have to remember him, the Indian bloke, singing - a cracker).

Still scratching my head as to why ....nice gesture but what does it achieve? The original landscape didn't include them so ??
Still an interesting part of our history ..... surprising more aren't found between Robe SA and the Vic goldfields, guess there were very careful with their possessions.
Cheers Tom.

Nahh,....as it should be. left for the future when importance is beyond doubt. Able to be used in its proper context when the time is right.!

Forgive my cynicism but I'm not sure I'm buying what an expert is selling here. One coin? That's a long bow, I would require more overlaying substantial secondary indications to acknowledge it as proof, but got to love what a wonderful and mysterious thing history is. I hope they geta chance to come up with some more. Thanks for the share loamer.

I have also found some of these coins. The coins I found were in Victoria. They were often carried and used many years later during goldrush. Just because date of coin is 1700's doesn't mean it was lost in that period. It was proble lost when chinese rushed to goldfield discoveries in the latter half of the 1800's. As to the supposed chinese aboriginal connection, white man & european's were in this country in during this period also so I don't see a connection to the Aboriginals.
I read this story as newspaper bullxxxx & hype to tell a whopping story.
There was millions of these coins made because this emperor reigned for such a long time & the value of coin is only 2-3 dollars Australia.

During the gold rush many people from many countries made there way here. All by boat, boats also were not built as well and many sank or were shipwreck. Many people used boats to go island to island to get to Australia from Indonesia, Europe, China & many others places. Sorry but like I stated coin date does not mean it was lost during that time. This coin is chinese but I can't see any other connection to any nationality or race, it was lost & possible not even passed to anybody. If there is a connection at all, it could have been a ship wrecked then the chinese Murdered or cannibalized but it is all speculation.
There is just is no proof in this case. I certainly wouldn't believe the newspaper story.

Agree with Dave. My dad had similar coins in his collection. Found no where near the gold fields. There have been ancient Roman coins found in Australia. Doesn't mean the Romans where here.

Same could be said for the Chinese coins that I've personally found, any one can say anything now days and seem to be an expert on the matter. When it's all said and done we will still be none the wiser as we weren't there when it was lost or found.

No coin no proof. That photo in the hand could have been taken anywhere. I also don't buy the state of preservation, if it was found where it says it was.

Some people simply refuse to insert geographically recognisable backgrounds into their photos, as this stops the leaches working out where they did or didn't remove the treasure from, I guess this saves them from a lot of heart ache when they return to the site to do follow up work/retrieval or further research of their own.

The interesting thing about written history is it can be re-fabricated at any time.

Sailors travelled around the world. history is a matter of convenience. some articles say ancient Egyptians landed in NSW.
I found a 10 pennia,finnish coin, 1922 in my country port town.

I've seen an interesting video at one time on Egyptians having supposedly buried and retrieved a body in NSW in ancient times, hieroglyphs and all.

there was also a gravestone found somewhere in the NT from memory with a date inscription of early 1700 , cant recall the nationality / language , portugese possibly.

I cant see any risk of international lawyers take up a court challenge on behalf of the great great great great grandson of an early visitor to australia , claiming ownership of the turf here ;)
