I noticed that people use castor wheels to build their trommels. The castor wheels at the local shop do not seem to have any kind of bearing inside the wheel. It's just plastic wheel onto a metal shaft, or nylon wheel onto a metal shaft etc.

How well do these wheels without bearing hold up?

I've seen another member here use scooter wheels. The small solid ones with bearings.

"Richmond castors" website have castors for every use heavy and light. Worth a look even if only for ideas.

I use scooter wheels on my trommel and the reason behind this is that when normally used they would endure a pounding in all kinds of environments, they have a smooth feel to them when running and have bearings in them, my trommel runs really smooth.

I support the recycling shop at the tip and have found heaps of usable gear at a real good price.

Inline skates = 8 wheels (Nylon? with bearings)-50cents.
Big choice of scooters - paid $5.
Motorised bikes and cars 6 and 12v motors with great gearboxes (rotate wheels to check for missing gear teeth). Using 1 on 4 inch trommel and another on a 6 inch.
Have run tests on both and should have the 4 inch completed for the Spring.

Cheers
Bob
