Buttons and Buckles

Hello to all,
Being too wet outside some old junk finds were sorted and cleaned up a little.

Photo 3 and 4

I would like to find out some information on the above items if possible.
Photo 3&4,The two buckles seem the same type, different makers?
The button in the middle top photo 1 might have been silver plated.
The brass button bottom right,,,, no idea at all. Photo 2 is the underside of brass button.

Just picked out another button, less spectacular than most but special in its own way....it is lead!!

What ever works/available!
It is about the size of a 10 cent.

what do you use to clean the buttons?? I have a collection of them and not sure how to clean them.

I found a picture of a button the same as my brass button. Unfortunately it is by another manufacturer in Sydney, 'Amor'

Good Morning belladonna,
Only use soft toothbrush, water and sometimes a little Vinegar. I am always careful with other cleaners, might loose the lot.

Thanks for the info, we were thinking we might put them through the ultrasonic cleaner first to remove the dirt & sh#t of them, then clean with a small brush.

Great thread Diablo. I've found a few buttons, 7 more today and wondered how they would clean up. I'll give the toothbrush /Water & vinegar a go.

Never found a buckle, they look great.

Hi all,
The thing that blows me away is the quality of the metal used in the old buttons and buckles. Considering what happens to most metals when left in the ground on the goldfields. Brass shell casings go brittle, copper corrodes etc.
The buckles in photo 3&4 show very little corrosion, maybe the coatings have gone like the button middle top photo 1. The makers took great care in their design and manufacture. They certainly have lasted well!

nice finds ..... the button bottom right has a monogram on it that looks to me as " I R "

Great clean up. It's fantastic how they date the buckles. They took great pride in their work in those days ..... Brand name and date.
