Build own VLF metal detector

Hi All,
I have a very strong passion for gold detecting but the available detectors here are very expensive (in the order of $6000).
The slight advantage is that i come from an electronics background and i am interested in building my own detector.

I have searched online for dozens of hours but i could not find a breakthrough. I would be very much grateful if someone would give me some pointers on the way forward, particularly on the building blocks and flow diagrams of VLF and Pulse Induction metal detectors.

Relevant knowledge: DSP, micro-controllers, dsPic, FPGA's and single board computers...

But you can buy second hand one either whites or SD for about 800-1000, I've sold my sd2000 un-moded for 850.
